Anna Camille Kliem, who
was born on Sept. 17, 2011, the "official" first day of the dam removals on the Elwha. Her grandmother, Shirley Nixon of Port Angeles, will one day walk with this child on a fully restored river.

The official ceremony heralding the long-awaited start of dam removal on the Elwha River was held on September 17th, 2011. The decommissioning of the two Elwha River dams is both symbolic and meaningful, as salmon will again return to the protected river inside of Olympic National Park. Visitors to the ceremony had to walk across the 98 year old relic that was the Elwha Dam, which was spruced up for the occasion with paintings from local artists. The first piece in this celebratory procession of artistic tributes was the painting 'Elwha be Free' by Malia Mercer.
